Given :  A horticulturist wishes to mix two brands fertilisers,  that will provide a minimum of 15 units of potash,  20 units of nitrate and 24 units of phosphate.

One unit  of brand I provides 3 units of potash, 1 unit of nitrate  and 3 units of phosphate. It costs 120 per unit.

One  unit of brand II provides 1 unit of potash, 5 units of  nitrate and 2 units of phosphate. It costs 60 per unit.

To Find : Formulate the problem as LPP to minimize the cost.

Solution:

X , Y ≥ 0

X = 1st brand

Y = 2nd Brand

3X  + Y  ≥ 15

X + 5Y  ≥ 20

3X + 2Y ≥ 24

Cost = 120X  + 60Y

Critical Point

( 0 , 15)  , ( 2 , 9)   ,   (  80/13 , 36/13)  , (20 , 0)

  X          Y                  120X  + 60Y

  0           15                   900

  2           9                     780

  20         0                     2400

80/13      36/13                904

Brand 1  = 2

Brand 2 = 9

Minimum Cost = 780
