Step-by-step explanation:

Given A shopkeeper buys an article whose list price is 8000 at some rate of discount from a  wholesaler. He sells the article to a consumer at the list price. The sales are intra-state  and the rate of GST is 18%. If the shopkeeper pay a tax (under GST) of 72 to the  State Government, find the rate of discount at which he bought the article from the  wholesaler.

  • Given list price of the article is Rs 8000
  • The shopkeeper sells the article to customer at list price with GST
  • = 18 / 100 x 8000
  • Let discount rate be a %
  • So discount = a/100 x 8000
  •                   = 80 a
  • New price after discount will be 8000 – 80 a
  • So 18% GST will be 18/100 x (8000 – 80 a)
  • Now GST paid by shopkeeper to Government will be
  • 18/ 100 x 8000 – 18/100 (8000 – 80 a) = 72
  • 18/100 (8000 – 8000 + 80 a) = 72
  • 18/100 x 80 a = 72
  • 72 a / 5 = 72
  • Or a = 5
  • Therefore rate of discount is 5%
