Hi there,

Oxidation number of oxygen is -2 lets calculate the other elements

MnO4^-1 => Mn = +7

Br^-1 => Br = -1

MnO2 => Mn = +4

BrO3^-1 = > Br = +5

So, Mn reduced and Br oxidized

Lets balance each half reaction

• MnO4 = MnO2

• MnO4 = MnO2 + 2H2O

☆ 3e+ 4H2O + MnO4 = MnO2 + 2H2O + 4OH

The other half

• Br = BrO3

• 3H2O + Br = BrO3

• 3H2O + Br = BrO3 + 6H2O

The sum of two halfs

☆ 6OH + Br = BrO3 + 3H2O + 6e

☆ 6e + 4H2O + 2MnO4 = 2MnO2 + 8OH

The equation

◇ Br^-1 + H2O + 2MnO4^-1 = 2OH^-1 + BrO3^- + 2MnO2
