Given:

A spring applied with a force within the elastic limit.

To find:

Variation of restoring force with respect to displacement from mean position ?

Calculation:

First of all, the restoring spring force is dependent on the displacement (from mean position) as follows:

 \boxed{ \bf \therefore \: F =  - kx}

  • Here F is restoring force , k is a constant and x is the displacement from mean position.

  • - ve sign denotes that the restoring force is opposite to the displacement.

We can also say that :

 \boxed{ \bf \implies \: F  \propto  - x}

  • So, if we plot a F vs x graph , it will show a linear graph with negative slope.

  • When x will be negative (let's say spring is compressed) the force will be positive, and vice versa.
