South America has two great natural features that shape the landscape: the Andes Mountains and the
Amazon river. The Andes extends all the way down the western edge of the continent, from warm
tropical Columbia to the cold lands of Southern Chile and Argentina. The Amazon begins high in the
Peruvian Andes not far from the Pacific Ocean, and flows through a huge tropical rainforest all the way
to the Atlantic. It is the world's second longest river and drains an area half the size of the United
States. South America also has grasslands, swamps and cold deserts.
