(d) O₂ and CO₂ are the gases involved in breathing.

Breathing is the process of inhalation of oxygen and exhalation of carbon dioxide for respiration.

Process of Breathing:

  • Inhalation: The process of breathing-in oxygen through the nostrils from the atmosphere is termed as inhalation.
  • Exhalation: The process of breathing-out carbon dioxide is termed as exhalation.

Process of exchange of gases in lungs:

  • Soon as the oxygen enters the lungs it diffuses into the bloodstream because of its shortage in blood.
  • Simultaneously, carbon dioxide diffuses from the bloodstream to the lungs then comes out via nasal pathway.

Alveoli, a sac-like structure is mainly responsible for the exchange of gases within the lungs.
