Reason for East India Company worried about Russia:

  • The East India Company was concerned about Russia throughout the late 1830s because it felt it could spread through Asia and reach India through the northwest.
  • And motivated by this concern they wanted to maintain their influence on the subcontinent's northwestern frontiers.

To do so, they waged the preceding wars:

  • A protracted war with Afghanistan between 1838 and 1842 to create there an unofficial law of the corporation.
  • A war with others and seized control of the area of Sindh in 1843 .
  • A full-scale war with Punjab (Sikh Kingdom) following the collapse of Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1839; Punjab was eventually taken over in 1849.
