Total number of students = (1200 + 600) = 1800.

Number of students who passed = (42% of 1200) + (30% of 600)

= (1200 × 42/100) + (600 × 30/100) = (504 + 180) = 684.

Number of failures = (1800 - 684) = 1116.

∴ Percentage of failures = (1116/1800 × 100)% = 62%.
