Ethylene glycol is used in antifreeze mixtures for automobiles. Finding the temperature at which it changes from a liquid to a gas (boiling) is the aim of the experiment.

You will set up the 150 mL beaker on the wire gauze over the Bunsen burner and place the thermometer in the liquid so that it does not touch the beaker (are you allowed to hold it or use it as a stirring rod?).

You will heat the specimen (with stirring) until bubbles form (the beginning of boiling) and record the temperature. You might also remove the heat and watch for the bubbles to stop forming as the liquid cools (this should be at the same temperature).

The literature value for the boiling point of Ethylene glycol is 197.3 °C (just a little under 200 °C).
