We know that,

  • In continued proportion the mid term is used twice for both the side.
  • Taking this, solve for p

= 8 : 12 :: 12 : p

= \dfrac{8}{12} = \dfrac{12}{p}

  • Cross multiply

= 8p = 12 × 12

= 8p = 144

= p = \dfrac{144}{8}

= p = 18
