Aquatic plant are heterophily due to key factor called adaptation.

EXPLANATION:

Many plant can change their leaf morpjology in response to external changes which is termed as heterophily. This commonly found in land plants. It is found to be adaptive mechanism because it allows the plant to adjust to various environmental condition.

Various research done shows that this process is regulated by controlled production of phytohormones like auxins (Indole acetic acid), ethylene, giberellins.
