13. Forces, applied on an object, along the same direction add to one another; if
the forces are applied in opposite direction on a given object), the net force
acting on it is the difference between the forces, this net force acts along the
direction of the larger force.
If a box of mass 'm' has to be moved from position A to position B, the force
has to be applied in such a manner so that the box moves in the direction
towards position B. The magnitude of force applied depends on its mass 'm'
which determines the force with which box is pressing the surface on which
it is lying
Define balanced forces".
(b) Which force opposes the motion of the box on the surface on which it is
kept ?
(c)
Does the above mentioned force remain constant or does it keep on
changing (within limits)?
(d) Name the kind of forces (balanced or unbalanced) which can bring about
change in the position, speed or direction of motion of the object on which
they are acting

Answer:

Q.13

(a) Balanced forces are those that are opposite in direction and equal in size. Balanced forces are considered to be in a state of equilibrium. When forces are balanced there is no change in direction. Combined forces that are balanced are always equal to zero.

(b) Frictional force opposes the motion of the box on the surface on which it is kept.

(c) the forces mentioned above can remain constant if no external force is applied or it can keep on changing if external force is applied.

(d)  Unbalanced forces like frictional force, magnetic force, muscular force can change the position, speed or direction of motion of the object on which  they are acting.
