  • Pen is mightier than sword.

=> Pen and sword are separate terms. There are 2 of them :

  1. Pen
  2. Sword

Each of them is being compared to either. So ; as there are just 2 things comparing , we take the comaprative degree of mighty.

  • There is a lot of petrol in his bike .

=> Several is a word used for countable things like ; people , things , flowers , etc. And a lot of is a quantifier that is specifically used for uncountable things like ; water , petrol , grains . Quantifiers are used in this case as we can count the given things by ordinals or Cardinals.

  • You don't have so much gold as he has.

=> Here two people are being compared based on possession of gold. Always more things are compared with so , hence more has been used .

Quantifiers :

Quantifiers are the words that are used to give count of nouns. They come under determiners .

Quantifiers can be used for both countable and uncountable nouns.

Eg :

  • Some
  • Many
  • Lots of
  • A few
  • Few
  • Lot of
  • Least
  • Much

a.) Pen is mightier than sword.

Pen and sword are two terms denoting empowerment.

As, per William Shakespeare play he uses pen & swords for denoting power as a degree of comparison.

But, this explains the education is more better than sword. The comprison level is higher here.

  • Mighty is for short range comparison.

  • Mightier is for long range comparison.

So, we say Pen is mightier than sword.

b.) There is a lot of petrol in his bike.

We know petrol is in liquid state measured on basis of volume & it's uncountable.

So here,

Several is a comparative word for comparing countable things.

  • eg. Their are several fruits in basket.

A lot of is a quantifier word that is basically used where uncountable things are present.

  • eg. I drank a lot of water.

Therefore we use, There is a lot of petrol in his bike.

c.) You don't have so much gold as he has.

=> We cannot compare something's quantities if have something in less amount to be of high amount .

Suppose if you have 5 apple & people z have 1 apple.

One cannot say, "You don't have so less apple as z has." Because ,basically we deal with large quantities for comparison.

Therefore, You don't have so much gold as he has.
