Litmus solution is a purple dye, which is extracted from lichen, a plant belonging to the division Thallophyta,

and is commonly used as an indicator. When the litmus solution is neither acidic nor basic, its colour is

purple. There are many other natural materials like red cabbage leaves, turmeric, coloured petals of some

These are called acid-base indicators or sometimes simply indicators.

a) Why are indicators used frequently in laboratories? How is litmus indicator obtained?

b) An acidic and an alkaline solution is kept in two beakers A and B. How will you determine the nature of

the solutions by using red and blue litmus papers?

c) Why does the colour of curry stain change on dipping in soap solution?

d) Which synthetic indicator can be used to detect the point when all molecules of HCl have been

neutralized by NaOH during a neutralization reaction? Give the colour change.
