now according to Pythagoras theorem;

(hypotenuse) ^2 = (base)^2 + (altitude) ^2

(13)^2 = x^2 + (x-7)^2

169 = x^2 + x^2 + 49 - 14x

2x^2 - 14x - 120 = 0...simplifying

x^2 - 7x - 60 = 0

x^2 - 12x + 5x - 60 = 0

x (x - 12) + 5 (x - 12) = 0

(x-12) (x+5) = 0

x = 12 , - 5

now if x = -5 ,

base = -5 , altitude = -12 which is not possible as they can't be negative.

so if x = 12;

base = 12cm , altitude = 5cm
