Elastic collisions are those collisions in which both momentum and kinetic energy of the system under collision are conserved. If the collisions between the gas molecules were not elastic, the energy would have transformed into some other form of energy and would have dissipated .

Moreover the pressure of the gas will also get lowered , if the collisions are not elastic.
