Answer:

Kara read 20 pages of her new book on Saturday. She read 1/4 of the remaining pages on Sunday. She still has 36 pages to read. How many pages are in Kara's book?

Let X be the number of pages in the book.

Saturday: She reads 20 pages so at the end of the day there are ( X - 20 ) pages unread

Sunday: She reads ( 1/4 ) of remaining pages which means ( 3/4 ) of the remaining pages remain unread.

So: ( 0.75 )(X - 20 ) remain unread.

After Sunday there were 36 pages still to read. So

( 3/4 ) * (X - 20 ) = 36 pages

or

3X - 60 = 144

Therefore 3X = 144 + 60 = 204 pages

Therefore X = 68 pages in total (the total number of pages in the book)

So total number of pages is 68.
