Answer:

Average speed = 40 km/hr

Explanation:

Given:

  • Car travels 30 km at a speed of 30 km/hr
  • Car travels next 30 km at a speed of 60km/hr

To Find:

  • Average speed of the car

Concept:

First find the time taken in both the cases and find the total time and total distance travelled. Substituting the values in the formula for finding the average speed we get the value of it.

Solution:

First we have to find the time taken in the first case.

We know that time is given by,

Time = Distance/Speed

Substitute the data,

Time = 30/30

Time = 1 hour

Now we have to find the time taken in the second case.

Time = 30/60

Time = 0.5 hour

Hence time taken in the second case is 0.5 hour.

Hence total time taken in the both cases is given by,

Total time = 1  + 0.5

Total time = 1.5 hours

Now we have to find the total distance travelled by the car.

Total distance = Distance travelled in first case + Distance travelled in second case

Total distance = 30 + 30

Total distance = 60 km

Now we have to find the average speed.

Average speed = Total distance travelled/Total time taken

Substitute the data,

Average speed = 60/1.5

Average speed = 40 km/hr

Hence the average speed of the car is 40 km/hr.
