14. A labourer was engaged for 30 days on the condition that he will get 60 for each day he works and
will be fined 10 for each day he is absent. If he gets 1,700 at the end of the month, for how many
days did he remain absent?

Answer:

Let number of days labourer did work =xdays

⇒ Then number of days he was absent =(30−x)days

⇒ Amount for days he worked =60x

⇒ Amount cut for days he was absent =10(30−x)=300−10x

According to the question,

60x−(300−10x)=1700

60x−300+10x=1700

50x−300=1700

50x=1400

x=

50

1400

∴ x=28days

⇒ Absent days =30−28=2days

∴ A labourer remain absent for 2days.
