Concept:

Capacitor: The device that stores electrical energy in an electric field is known as a capacitor.

The ratio of the quantity of electric charge held on a conductor to an electric potential difference is known as capacitance.

Given:

A parallel plate air capacitor has capacitance C.

Half of the space is filled with a dielectric material with a dielectric constant K=5.

Find:

The new capacitance.

Solution:

The capacitance of a parallel plate air capacitor is C.

The dielectric constant, K=5.

The capacitance formula is given by:

C=\frac{\varepsilon _oA}{d}, where \varepsilon _o,A,d are the electrostatic constant, area, and distance between the plates respectively.

When the plate is divided into half.

The new capacitance,

C'=\frac{(\frac{A}{2} )(5)\varepsilon _o}{d} +\frac{\frac{A}{2}\varepsilon _o }{d}

C'=3\frac{A\varepsilon _o}{d}  \\C'=3C

Therefore, the new capacitance is 3C.
