Alkaloidal incompatibility is a type of B. Chemical incompatibility.

Chemical incompatibility:

"Chemical incompatibility can be defined as the change in the chemical properties of pharmaceutical dosage forms as a result of a reaction between more than two substances."

Types of Chemical Incompatibility:

  • Chemical incompatibilities can be classified into alkaloid incompatibility, soluble salicylate incompatibility and soluble iodides incompatibility.
  • Of these the alkaloid incompatibility includes alkaloid salt containing alkaloidal elements, soluble iodides, tannins, salicylates, or bromides.
  • Commonly chemical incompatibilities occurs due to change in the pH, oxidation-reduction reactions, acid base hydrolysis and double decomposition.
  • They can be visually assessed by the formations of precipitation, effervescence, colour change, decomposition or explosion.

Chemical incompatibilities also has other types such as tolerated and adjusted incompatibilites, immediate and delayed incompatibilities, intentional and unintentional incompatibilities.
