x +  \frac{1}{x}  = 3

By squaring on both sides

(x +  \frac{1}{x} ) {}^{2}  =  {3}^{2}

 {x}^{2}  + 2 \times x \times  \frac{1}{x}  +  \frac{1}{x {}^{2} }  = 9

 {x}^{2}  + 2 +  \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} } = 9

 {x}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} }  = 9 - 2

 {x}^{2}  +  \frac{1}{ {x}^{2} }  = 7

a + b = 9

On squaring both sides

(a + b) {}^{2}  =  {9}^{2}

a {}^{2}  +  {b}^{2}  + 2ab = 81

45 + 2ab = 81

2ab = 81 - 45

ab = 36 \div 2

ab = 18

Hope it helps you......
