14. Electronegativity values of some elements are given.
H - 2.20 0 - 3.44 Mg = 1.31
On the basis of electronegativity values, identify the type of chemical bond in HO
and Mgo. Give reasons.

Answer:
H-O bond will be covalent and Mg-O bond will be ionic.
Explanation:
As far as I remember, for a bond to have ionic character, difference in EN or ΔEN must be more than 1.7 .
For the H-O bond,
ΔEN = 3.44 - 2.20 = 1.22
1.22 < 1.7
thus, it is covalent.
For the Mg-O bond,
ΔEN = 3.44 - 1.31 = 2.13
2.13 > 1.7
thus, it is ionic.
Important advice:
Though I have given the answer, I'm not really very sure about its correctness. So, if possible, make sure you get it verified by a teacher.
Thank you. :)
