14. Identify the limiting reagent in the following reactions:
6.5 g of wine added into an aqueous solution containing 12.0 g of sulphuric acid produces
2.24 L of hydrogen gas.
b. A solution containing 7.4 g of Ca(OH), is treated with a sample of hard water
containing 15.0 g of Ca(HCO3).

Answer:

Reaction of zinc with sulphuric acid-

Zn + H2SO4 → ZnSO4 + H2

According to the reaction,

1 mole of zinc that is 65.39 g of zinc reacts with 1 mole of sulphuric acid that is 98 g of sulphuric acid to produce 1 mole of hydrogen gas that is 22.4L at STP.

Given mass of zinc = 6.5g

Since 65.39 g of zinc completely reacts with 98 g of sulphuric acid, therefore amount of sulphuric acid required to completely react with 6.5 g of zinc is given as, 9865.39×6.5 = 9.74 g of sulphuric acid.

But given mass of sulphuric acid = 12 g

Therefore, sulphuric acid is present in excess. So zinc is limiting reagent in the reaction.
