Change direct into reported speech:

  • Mrs White told us that she would stay at home next weekend.

  • Peter and Sally said that they live in New York.

  • He told me that they had been dancing all the time.

  • Mum asked me if I had seen her daughter.

  • He asked me who had cleaned the pool.

  • Marliyan said that she always ate cornflakes in the morning.

  • He advised her to give up smoking.

Golden Rules:

  • If the reported verb is in past tense, the tense of the verb in reported speech should also be past tense.

  • If the reported speech related to some habitual or universal facts, the simple past tense in the reported speech remains unchanged, that is not changed at all.

  • Pronouns and possessive adjectives of first person and second person in direct speech at change into third person in indirect speech.
