Step-by-step explanation:

Given:-

  • The total number of questions in a test is 180.

  • 4 marks are awarded for each correct question

  • And 1 mark is deducted for each unattempt or incorrect question.

To Find:-

  • If a candidate scored 450 marks in the test, how many questions did he answer correctly.

Solution:-

Let the number of correct answers be x

And the number of incorrect answers be y

As, the total number of questions is 180

⇢ x + y = 180.....(i)

4 marks are awarded for each correct question , And 1 mark is deducted for each unattempt or incorrect question.

A candidate gets 450 marks

⇢ 4x - y = 450.....(ii)

Adding equations (i) and (ii)

⇢ x + y + 4x - y = 450 + 180

⇢ x + 4x + y - y = 630

⇢ 5x = 630

⇢ x = \dfrac{630}{5}

⇢ x = 126

Substituting x = 126 in equation (i)

⇢ x + y = 180

⇢ 126 + y = 180

⇢ y = 180 - 126 = 54[/tex]

The number of correctly answered questions is 126
