Answer:Divisibility rules are great for figuring out the smallest number to subtract from 8317 to make it divisible by 18.

As quoted from Wikipedia:

“It is divisible by 2 and by 9″

This means it has to be even and follow the divisibility rule for nine.

“Sum the digits. The result must be divisible by 9.”

We’ll minus one to make 8316. The sum of 8, 3, 1 and 6 is 18. Guess what? That’s divisible by 9.  18/9=2. It’s also even, which means it follows the divisibility rule for 18.

And to check once more:

8316/18=462

Therefore, you need to minus one from 8317 to get 8316.
