In 1947 Lord Mountbatten became the Governor General of India. He tried to resolve the political deadlock of our country. He made an important announcement on June 3, 1947. This announcement was known Mountbatten plan or June 3rd plan. According to this plan-

i)India had to be divided into two independent Countries namely Indian Union and Pakistan Union.

ii) The Princely States were given the option to Join either of the two new nations or to remain independent.

iii) Both the Congress and the Muslim League accepted this plain.
