The statement which best describes the role of the ozone layer is- B. It protects the plants and animals on earth from receiving too much ultraviolet radiation.

The role of ozone layer is described below:

  • The ozone layer is present in the stratosphere layer of the atmosphere where its main role is to prevent the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiations coming from the sun to enter the Earth's surface and thus, protects the plants and animals from receiving too much UV radiation.
  • Along with other greenhouse gases, the ozone gas also absorbs some part of the solar radiation and prevent it from going into space. Thus, it is also involved in heating the surface of the Earth.

Note:

Exposure to ultraviolet radiation causes various skin problems such as skin cancer and eye-related problems like cataracts etc. The depletion of the ozone layer is causing several skin problems in many parts of the world.
