Policemen register the FIR.

  • An FIR is also known as a First Information Report. It is a written document prepared by the police when they receive information about a cognizable offense.
  • Anyone can lodge an FIR. If a person knows about a commission of a cognizable offense, they can file an FIR. It does not just have to be a victim of a crime, it can be any person who knows about the crime.
  • A person must then report the crime to a police officer so that they can file an FIR. It is the duty of a police officer to bind to register a case on the basis of information disclosed in a cognizable offense irrespective of territorial jurisdiction. Action must then be taken against officers who do not register the FIR if they receive information disclosed to them.
  • Once the FIR has been filed, the police can then investigate the crime and capture those who have caused the crime which will then be left to the judicial system.
