Answer
Mahatına Gandhi was the first to pay attention to the pitiable
condition of scheduled castes. He made all the possible efforts to
uplift the standard of living of so-called untouchables. He named
them "Harijan-The offsprings of God" and demanded equality for
them in the society. He adopted a very logical view for this.
He was not convinced with the old Hindu tradition that decides the
position of the man in the society by his birth. His opinion was that
Indian society had been divided into four segments to facilitate it.
It was the division of labour, not the division of higher and lower rank
of people. A proper society needs all the kinds of people-intellectual,
businessman, soldier and physical worker. None of the classes of the
people is either superior or inferior.
