15. The IUPAC name of the following compound
CH3-CH2-CH=CH-CH2-CH2-CH3 is hept-3-ene and not hept-4-ene.
How do you justify this​

Answer:

as in the given compound double is attatched with carbon no.3 if we count from left and with carbon no.4 if we count from right so numbring begins from the end nearer to double bond and it is from left side so we gave compound a name "3-heptene / hept-3-ene"....

The double bond ( = ) or triple bond should be given importance, and hence should be named hept-3-ene instead of hept-4-ene.

Here, hept is the name given to the no.of carbon atoms and the double bond should be taken to the least possible number, hence u must start numbering from left rather than right.
