Sodium is kept in kerosene to block it from reacting with moisture and oxygen as sodium is an alkali metal which is very reactive. It catches when reacting with water and oxygen.

Sodium reacts too vigorously with water. It burns up while reaction. It does not reacts vigourously with the kerosene likeways with water. Thus, it is kept immersed in kerosene...
