Answer : The formula of gaseous hydrocarbon will be C_2H_4

Explanation :

The reaction can be shown as:

C_xH_y+(x+\frac{y}{4})O_2\rightarrow xCO_2+\frac{y}{2}H_2O

The ratio of the volumes of oxygen and hydrocarbon used in the combustion = 45 : 15 = 3 : 1

The ratio of carbon dioxide produced and hydrocarbon used = 30 : 15 = 2 : 1

That means,

x+\frac{y}{4}=3    and    x = 2

Now put the value of 'x' in this expression we get:

x+\frac{y}{4}=3

2+\frac{y}{4}=3\\\\\frac{y}{4}=1\\\\y=4

Thus, the formula of gaseous hydrocarbon will be C_xH_y=C_2H_4
