5. Assam is rich in mineral resources. Petroleum, natural gas, coal, and limestone are the state's principal mineral resources. Among these petroleum is the most important. Oil was first discovered at Digboi as early as 1867.
6. The main Scheduled Tribes (Plains) are Bodo, Deori, Kachari, Mising etc and Karbi, Dimasa etc. has Scheduled Tribes (hills) status.
7. The rate of growth of occupation and wealth in Assam cannot keep pace with this high rate of population growth creating problems of unemployment, poverty and inequality of income in the region.
