16. A boat takes 9 hours to travel a distance upstream and takes 3 hours to travel the same distance
downstream. If the speed of the boat in still water is 4 km/hr, what is the speed of the stream

Step-by-step explanation: take x = speed of boat (4 km/h) and y = speed of stream

in upstream   distance = 9(x-y)         (I)

in downstream    distance =  3(x+y)        (ii)

distance is equal so also these equation equal

so   9(x-y) = 3(x+y)

put the of x in it  9(4-y) = 3(4+y)

                           36 -9y = 12 +3y

                           3y +9y = 36 - 12

                           12y = 24

                            y = 2

hence the speed of stream is 2 km/h
