16. A boat takes 9 hours to travel a distance upstream and takes 3 hours to travel the same distance
downstream. If the speed of the boat in still water is 4 km/hr, what is the speed of the stream?

17. Kartik buys some apples at the rate of 10 per apple. He also buys an equal number of oranges at
rate of 6 per orange. He make a 15% profit on apples and 8% profit on oranges. The total profit earn
by Kartik at the end of the day is 396. When all fruit is sold out, find the number of apples purchased.

Answer:

(16)       2km/hr

Step-by-step explanation:

(16)       x-y=d/9 and x+y=d/3

from speed=dist /time

taking d as common

(x-y)9=(x+y))3

subs x=4in eq

y=2km/hr

(17)     Let the no. Of apples be=x

And the no. Of orenges be =y

Total cost=(10x+6y)Rs

Total frofit=396

Now he made a profit of 15%over apples and 8%profit over orenges...

Total profit=(10x*(15/100)+6y(8/100))Rs

=(150x+48y)/100.

Now...

(150x+48y)/100=396

150x+48y=39600

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

16. Let the speed of stream be x

Upstream speed = 4-x

Downstream speed = 4+x

Since the distance is same:

9(4-x) = 3(4+x)

36 - 9x = 3x + 12

12x = 24

x = 2km/hr

17. Let the number of apple and orange be x

Cost of apple = 10x

Cost of orange = 6x

15% profit on apple = 1.5x

8% profit on orange = 0.48x

Total profit = 1.5x + 0.48x = 1.98x

Given 1.98x = 396

x = 396/1.98

= 200
