Option C. They struck treaties that favoured the settlers.

Settlers who moved West were mostly from Britain, France and the Netherlands. The tribal population in the West were uneducated and therefore could be easily manipulated. The settlers made treaties which favoured themselves, with the gullible tribes. They could also win over the tribal people with small gifts and tokens.

When these tactics failed, settlers who were better armed than the tribes, resorted to coercion and force.

As more settlers moved west, They forced the tribes to move to other areas.

Option (D)

EXPLANATION:

  • Not everyone in the new Jacksonian democracy was included. Jacksonian Democrats had no initiative to bring women into political life or to fight against slavery. But it was the Native American who most suffered from the dream of America of Andrew Jackson.
  • Jackson, both as the President and a military leader, followed a policy of separating Indian tribes from their ancestral lands. This re-location made room for settlers and for speculators who had made huge profits from the buying and selling of lands.
  • The Indian policy had caused President Jasckson little political trouble since his main supporters were from the western and southern states and usually favoured a plan to eliminate all the Indian tribes to lands to Mississippi River towards the west. While Jackson and other politicians put a very positive and favourable spin on Indian elimination in their speeches, the extractions were often ruthless. There was not much which the Indians could do to protect themselves.
