It works on the principle that when a coil rotates in a uniform magnetic field, a current is induced in the coil.

Explanation:

Principle: In generator there is conversion of mechanical energy in to the electrical energy and the principle of motor is based on the right hand rule of Fleming which says that when an insulated copper coil of wire is forced to rotate in the presence of magnetic field which is present inside it will produce the electric current.  

Working: When horizontal generator ABCD is rotate in anti-clockwise between the two magnet, than AB side of coil will move towards the N- pole of magnet line where as CD will move towards the S-pole. Therefore current is produced in both side of the coil and this current will be in same direction.

Function of brushes: It is used to conduct the current from stationary to rotatory part.
