When we inhale/take in air by our mouth the air passes through our thorax into our lungs and fills the alveoli  which are like tiny air sacks covered with blood capillaries with a thin film of water on them the oxygen in our lungs is in higher concentration then our blood so it diffuses through the thin walls of the alveoli and the blood capillaries into the red blood cells and the blood has high concentration of carbon dioxide which then diffuses into the the alveoli and is exhaled out of our lungs.
