Difference in functioning of Kidney and Dialysis:

  • Kidneys are the main excretory organ of the human body. Whereas, dialysis is an artificial procedure for removal of unwated material from blood when kidneys stop functioning.

Now, the main difference:

Excretion through kidneys occur in 3 steps:

  • Ultra Filtration
  • Tubular Reabsorbtion
  • Active Tubular Secretion

However, in Hemo-Dialysis, the dialyzer (machine) simply pumps blood outside the body and passes it through a series of filter and diasylate fluid. The waste products from blood passes into the diasylate fluid and filtered blood is passed back into the body.

So, the difference is:

  • In kidneys, filtration occurs in-vivo, but in dialysis filtration occurs in-vitro.

  • In kidneys, tubular secretion and reabsorption occurs. But this doesn't happen in dialysis.
