Answer:

The molecular formula of hydrocarbon is \mathbf{C}_{3} \mathbf{H}_{6}

Explanation:

Hydrocarbon has carbon and hydrogen. The general molecular formula of hydrocarbon is \mathrm{C}_{\mathrm{x}} \mathrm{H}_{\mathrm{y}}

“x” denotes number of carbon atoms in hydrocarbon and “y” denotes number of hydrogen atoms in hydrocarbon.

From the given,

Volume of hydrocarbon = 16 ml

Volume of gaseous mixture = 48 ml

Reduce volume of KOH = 48 ml

Total volume of hydrocarbon (n) = 16 ml

n=16 ml

nx=48

x=\frac{48}{16}=3

Therefore, number of carbon atoms are three.

ny=48 ml

y=\frac{48}{16}=3

Each water molecule has two hydrogen,y=3 \times 2=6

Therefore, number of hydrogen atoms are six.

Hence , the molecular formula of hydrocarbon is \mathrm{C}_{3} \mathrm{H}_{6}
