Given,

16% of the total apples is bad.

The number of total good apples = 42

For calculating,the total number of apples,we have to calculate the total number of bad apples.

Let,the total apple = x

(Assume x as a variable to perform the further mathematical calculations.)

So,

The percentage of good apples = 100-16 = 84%

So,the number of good apples = x × 84/100 = x × 42/50 = x × 21/25  = 21x/25

Now,if we compare the number of good apple that we have calculated and the number of good apples is given in the question,we will get the following mathematical equation.

21x/25 = 42

x = 42 × 25/21

x = 50

Hence,there are 50 apples in the basket.

Answer:

50 apples

Step-by-step explanation:

bad apples = 16 percent

good apples = 42

let the apple= X

the percentage of good apple= x×42/50=x×21/25=21x/25=42

x=42×25/21

x=50
