Sodium chloride is a compound As it decomposes Into it's ion By the process of electrolytic decomposition whereas sodium and chloride(as elements) can't be decomposed into it's ions.though,it has same composition,melting point and boiling point and also appears same .Thus we consider Sodium chloride as a pure substance.
