20.3 Thin Lenses

An optical lens is a device formed from a transparent material, usually glass, that is designed to converge or diverge light rays. A lens has one or more curved surfaces. We will consider simple lenses having two surfaces, each of which is a portion of a sphere, as shown in Figure 20.29. A line passing through the centers of the two spheres is called the optical axis of the lens. We will concentrate on thin lenses designed for use in air. A thin lens is one with a thickness t that is negligibly small compared to the radius, R1 or R2, of either of the spherical surfaces.
