When I first started doing the concept of Time and Work, I came across a similar question.
In the first part of question, it said men OR women and this completely puzzled me. I thought it's a printing mistake and has to be men AND women. But I was wrong. The concept is pretty interesting so bear with me in the journey to solve this question.
Step 1.
We know 5 men or 9 women can do a job in 19 days. This means that 5 men can do it alone in 19 days. This also means that 9 women alone can do it too in 19 days.
For ease: M means Men & W means Women
Mathematically, 5 M = 19 days
And also, 9 W = 19 days
From Step 1, one assumption is clear. 5 men will take the same time as 9 women to do the same job. Yes? Good.
So, can we say, 9 women = 5 men ? Yes.
Then 1 woman = ? men
1 woman = (1 x 5)/9 That is: 5/9.
W = 5/9 M ——— > (a)
Now we can say, 1 woman is equal to 5/9 men.
If you understood till here, the rest is super simple.
The second part of the question asks: 3 men and 6 women will take how much time to do the same job. Please notice the word AND.
It means both men and women will be working.
3 M + 6 W.
Don't you think it would be easier if we convert the above equation into just one gender? Yes. Lets do it.
The 3 M is intact.
From (a): 6 W = 6 (5/9) M means 10/3 M
And done.
3 M + 10/3 M
That is, 19/3 M. So now, the question is: What is the time taken by these 19/3 M to finish the work.
Now, we know that 5 men did it in 19 days.
Then 19/3 men will do it in ?
The equation which we should use is:
M1 x T1 = M2 x T2
5 x 19 = 19/3 x T2
On solving, we get T2 equals 15 DAYS.
HENCE WE SAY THAT IF 5 MEN OR 9 WOMEN TAKE 19 DAYS TO DO A JOB THEN 3 MEN AND 6 WOMEN WILL TAKE 15 DAYS TO DO THE SAME JOB.
