17. Case Study -I
An equation is said to be a linear equation in two variables if it is written in the form of ax + by +
c = 0, where a, b and c are real numbers and the coefficients of x and y are not equal to zero.
General form of a Linear equation is ax + by + c = 0. The equation for a straight line is the linear
equation. Since linear usually stands for anything straight or in a line, thus the equation for lines
in the xy plane is said as linear equation. In Algebra, the degree is the largest exponent of the
variable in the given equation. If the equation has a degree one, it is a linear equation. In short,
the degree of linear equations is always one. The graph of the linear equation is a set of points in
the coordinate plane that all are solutions to the equation.
Answer the following questions based on the above information.
a) Neeraj plants 3 rows of tomatoes with 'n' plants in each row. He also plants one row of beans
with 5 plants in the row. Which of the following equations can be used to find '', the total
number of bean and tomato plants Neeraj planted.
(i) t = n + 8
(ü) t = 3a + 1
iii) t = 3n + 5
(iv) t = 5n + 3
