4. Read the passage given below and answer the following questions briefly.
Uranium is a metal with valuable properties. It provided mankind with the key that unlocked
the tremendous energy of the atom. It has natural radiation which can be used in medicine,
agriculture, industry and biology. Pure uranium metal looks like silver or steel. But it is heavier
than that. A one-foot cube of uranium weighs over half a tonne. It is the heaviest element
found in nature.
(Paral)
Uranium has two very unusual characteristics. It is radioactive. Its atoms break down slowly,
releasing energy in the form of radiation. Some of its atoms are capable of fission, releasing
vast amounts of energy. Uranium's 'fissionability' is the basis of all nuclear power plants and
nuclear
weapons.
Chemically
, uranium is very reactive. When a piece of uranium is exposed to air, it develops a
blackish coating, which is a combination of uranium and oxygen in the air. It also forms important
compounds with many other elements.
Uranium is widely distributed in small amounts. It is never found in nature in a pure state
Hence, the process of extracting uranium is complicated and takes a long time. A single pound
of uranium contains as much energy as three million pounds of coal. In nuclear reactors, the
shattering uranium atoms produce large quantities of heat. The heat produced thus can be used to
turn a turbine, which drives an electric generator.
