Plants nurture a whole world of creatures in the soil, that in return feed and protect the plants. This diverse community of living organisms keeps the soil healthy and fertile. This vast world constitutes soil biodiversity and determines the main biogeochemical processes that make life possible on Earth.

This year, by addressing the increasing challenges of soil management, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) campaign "Keep soil alive, protect soil biodiversity" aims to raise awareness of the importance of sustaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being. By encouraging people around the world to engage in proactively improving soil health, the campaign also aims to fight soil biodiversity loss. If we do not act soon, the fertility of soil will continue to be adversely affected at an alarming rate, threatening global food supplies and food safety.

Encouraging all people to participate, FAO has created a thematic website full of information, initiatives and material to spread the message through different multimedia platforms.

• By addressing the growing challenges in soil management, raising soil awareness, and enticing societies to improve soil health, World Soil Day 2022 (#WorldSoilDay) and its campaign "Soils: Where food begins" seek to increase awareness of the significance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being.
• In June 2013, the FAO Conference unanimously adopted World Soil Day and asked the 68th UN General Assembly to formally adopt it. In response, the UN General Assembly declared 5 December 2014 to be the first official World Soil Day in December 2013.
• For agricultural production, food security, and sustainability in arid and semi-arid environments, oil salinization and sodification are among the most significant soil degradation processes that pose a threat to ecosystems and are widely acknowledged as among the most significant issues globally.
• Significant effects of salt-affected soils include reduced agricultural output, poorer water quality, less soil biodiversity, and increased soil erosion. The ability of salt-affected soils to buffer and filter out contaminants is diminished. The availability of micronutrients and the capacity of crops to absorb water are both decreased in salt-affected soils. They may weaken the structure of the soil and concentrate ions that are hazardous to plants.
• Every year on December 5, World Soil Day (WSD) is observed to draw attention to the value of healthy soil and to promote the sustainable management of soil resources.
• The International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) suggested an international day to honour soil in 2002. Under the direction of the Kingdom of Thailand and in accordance with the Global Soil Partnership, FAO has backed the official launch of WSD as a platform for spreading awareness around the world. In June 2013, the FAO Conference unanimously adopted World Soil Day and asked the 68th UN General Assembly to formally adopt it.
