First, What is Digestion?

Digestion is a process in which large and complex food matters are broken down into simpler and absorbable forms in the presence of various water, in which various enzymes acts upon it.

What is the role of large intestine in digestion?

=>Large intestine consists of three parts- caecum, colon and rectum.

The colon consists of four parts which are ascending colon, descending colon, transverse colon and sigmoid colon.

The large intestine is responsible for absorbing water and salts from the undigested food matters.

It transports the waste materials or undigested materials and thus helps in egestion. The undigested food is temporarily stored and then discharged as feaces. So, Large intestine yet plays an important role in the process of digestion.

What are the products of digestion of carbohydrates, proteins and fats?

=> Carbohydrate digestion starts in mouth and ends in the small intestine. Some products of Amyolytic enzymes which acts upon carbohydrate are:-

  • Ptyalin = Maltose + Isomaltose (Secretes in the salivary gland, Boiled starch is the substrate)
  • Maltase = 2 Glucose (Secretes in the salivary gland, Maltose is the substrate)
  • Lactase = Glucose + Fructose (Secreted in the intestinal glands, Lactose acts as the substrate)

Products of protein:-

Proteolytic enzymes acts upon the protein content.

  • Pepsin = Peptone + Amino acid (Secretes in Gastric glands, protein is the substrate)
  • Trypsin = Lower peptide + Amino acid (Secreted in Pancreas, Peptone is the substrate)
  • Erepsin = Amino acids (Secreted in the small intestine, lower polypeptide is the substrate)

Products of fats :-

Lipolytic enzymes acts upon fats or lipids.

  • Pancreatic lipase = Fatty acid + glycerol (Secreted in the Pancreas, Lipid is the substrate)
  • Gastric lipase = Fatty acid + glycerol (trace) (Secreted in the Gastric glands, Lipid is the substrate)
  • Intestinal lipase = Fatty acid + glycerol (Secreted in the Small intestine, Lipid is the substrate)

In large Intestine digestion of Water takes place, which make its important for our digestion system.

End products-

  • Carbohydarte- Monosaccharides

  • Protein- Amino acid

  • Fats- Fatty acid & Glycerol
